AEO vs SEO: what's the difference, and do you need both?
The short answer: SEO optimizes for rankings in a list of links; AEO optimizes for citations inside AI-generated answers. They share foundations but target different outcomes, and in 2026 most brands need both.
The core difference
SEO is about links:
- Goal: rank a page in search results
- Surface: Google and Bing results pages
- Wins when: a user clicks your link
- Best content: comprehensive pages targeting keywords
- Measured by: position, clicks, traffic
AEO is about answers:
- Goal: get cited inside an AI-generated answer
- Surface: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews
- Wins when: an AI names you as the answer
- Best content: direct, citable answers and structured facts
- Measured by: mentions, citations, share of voice
Where they overlap
A lot, actually. Clean technical foundations, fast pages, clear information architecture, and genuinely useful content help both. If you've done good SEO, you're not starting from zero on AEO, your content is already indexed and your entity is partly established.
The difference is in emphasis. AEO rewards content that answers the question in the first sentence, uses structured formats (definitions, comparisons, lists, FAQs), and makes claims that are easy to quote and attribute. A 3,000-word SEO page that buries the answer in section 7 ranks fine but rarely gets cited.
Why "rank #1" no longer means what it did
For a growing set of queries, the AI answer sits above the classic links, and many users never scroll past it. You can rank #1 organically and still lose the buyer to whichever three sources the AI chose to cite. That's the gap AEO closes.
Do you need both?
For most software and service businesses: yes, but sequence them.
- If you have no organic presence, classic SEO content still builds the entity and corpus that AEO draws on, they compound.
- If you already rank but aren't getting cited, AEO is the higher-leverage move right now: you reframe and structure existing content to become quotable.
The honest answer for an early-stage brand: start with AEO on your highest-intent buyer questions (faster, less crowded), and let organic SEO content build underneath it.
