AI share of voice: how to measure and report it

AI share of voice is your brand's citation share versus named competitors for a defined set of buyer prompts, measured across the AI engines your buyers use. You measure it by running a fixed prompt set repeatedly, counting how often each brand is cited, and expressing yours as a percentage of the total. It's the single most useful AEO metric because it's relative — it tells you not just whether you're cited, but whether you're winning.

"Are we visible in AI?" is the wrong question, because visibility is relative. The right question is "what share of the answer do we own versus the brands we compete with?" Here's how to measure that honestly and report it so it drives decisions.

What AI share of voice actually is

Share of voice — or share of answer — in generative AI responses is the proportion of relevant AI answers that cite you, relative to your competitors. If, across your buyer prompts, you're cited in 30% of answers and your main rival in 45%, your share of voice is lower even if your raw citation count is growing. The comparison is the point. It extends the classic share-of-voice idea to the answer, not the ad or the results page.

How to measure it

Competitive share-of-answer measurement follows a repeatable method:

  1. Define the prompt set. 20–50 real buyer questions in your category. These are your measurement universe.
  2. Name the competitors. The 3–5 brands you actually compete with for the answer.
  3. Run each prompt repeatedly across your target engines, and record which brands are cited and where. Repetition matters because answers vary — see why AI answers change over time.
  4. Calculate share. For each prompt and overall, your citations as a percentage of all brand citations.
  5. Track the trend. Re-run on a schedule so you have a line, not a dot. The full measurement discipline is in how to measure AI visibility.

Leading vs lagging indicators

Share of voice is a lagging indicator — it moves after the work lands. To manage proactively, pair it with leading indicators:

  • Leading: new citable pages shipped, entity-consistency fixes, third-party sources earned, and mention velocity (how fast your citations are growing).
  • Lagging: share of voice, citation count, and the business outcomes downstream.

Measuring both leading and lagging share-of-voice signals lets you see momentum before the headline number catches up.

Impact on the SaaS sales pipeline

For SaaS, AI share of voice increasingly shapes the pipeline: buyers ask assistants for a shortlist, and the brands cited make it into consideration. A rising share of voice tends to precede more branded search, more high-intent inbound, and better win rates when you're already on the AI-generated shortlist. How AI is changing B2B buying covers the behavior shift. Attribute carefully — AI answers often influence without a traceable click — but treat share of voice as a real top-of-pipeline input, not a vanity metric.

How to report it to clients and stakeholders

A credible AI share-of-voice report includes:

  • The prompt set and competitor set, stated plainly, so the number is interpretable.
  • Share of voice overall and by prompt, with the trend since last period.
  • Movement explained — what you shipped, what competitors did, what's noise.
  • Leading indicators alongside the lagging number, so progress shows even before share moves.
  • Honest ranges, not false precision, and a named data source.

Reporting AI search share of voice to clients this way builds trust, because every number is traceable.
