What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of getting your brand mentioned and cited in the answers generated by AI engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. Where SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links, AEO aims to make your brand the answer an AI gives when someone asks a question.
Why AEO exists now
Buyers have changed how they search. Instead of scanning ten blue links, they ask an assistant, "what's the best tool for X?", and act on the handful of sources it cites. In 2026, 73% of B2B buyers use AI tools in their purchase research, and a growing share start there before they ever touch Google. If your brand isn't in that answer, you're invisible at the exact moment a decision is being made.
Traditional SEO doesn't solve this. Ranking #3 on a results page does nothing if the buyer never sees the page, because the AI summarized the answer and cited three other sources above the fold.
How answer engines actually choose sources
AI engines don't cite the "highest ranking" page. They cite content that is easy to extract, attribute, and trust. In practice that means:
- Clear, direct answers. Content that states the answer in the first sentence, not after 600 words of preamble.
- Strong entities. The engine needs to understand who you are and what you do. Consistent naming, structured data, and presence across the web build that.
- Citable structure. Definitions, comparisons, lists, statistics, and FAQs get quoted far more than narrative prose.
- Corroboration. Engines favor claims that appear consistently across multiple credible sources.
AEO vs SEO in one line
- SEO: earn a ranking in a list of links.
- AEO: earn a citation inside an AI-generated answer.
They overlap, good content and clean technical foundations help both, but the optimization targets are different. See AEO vs SEO for the full breakdown.
What an AEO program involves
- Pick the prompts. The 10–50 buyer questions where you want to be the answer.
- Measure your baseline. Where do you show up today across each engine, and who gets cited instead of you? See how to measure AI visibility.
- Fix the pages. Make them answer-first and machine-readable. Use the AEO checklist.
- Ship citable content. Definitions, comparisons, and data that engines want to quote.
- Track share of voice. Your citation share vs competitors, trending over time.
Is AEO worth it?
For most software and service businesses, yes, and earlier than you'd think. AI-sourced traffic tends to convert far better than generic search traffic because the buyer arrives pre-qualified by the assistant's recommendation. Being cited is closer to a referral than a click.
